Young carers are people under 18 who care for a relatives or friends who are ill, disabled, have learning difficulties, or are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Over 175,000 young people provide care in the UK and around 13,000 give 50 hours help or more per week. Sadly some young carers don’t even realise that they fall into the category of a carer and are unaware of the support available from the council and other organisations.
Caring for someone can have a huge impact on your life, especially if your still in education. It can take away your social life, make it harder to get homework done and even make you a target for bullies. Organisations, such as the Princes’ Trust and Barnardo’s, can take some of the stress and frustration out of caring, and be sure to check out Tower Hamlets’ ‘Young Carers Group’, which provides activities for young carers and their siblings.
