14+ Qualifications

At Key Stage 4, you have access to a wide range of qualifications. They vary in the style of learning and teaching, how the courses are assessed and how much they are related to the world of work. In some courses project work is very important and students are expected to research, make presentations and do practical activities. In others more emphasis is placed on essay writing. Have a look below for details on the options available to you.

GCSEs

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. These qualifications are highly valued by schools, colleges and employers, so will be useful whatever you are planning to do afterwards. You can take GCSEs in more than 40 academic and 9 applied subjects.

Vocational qualifications

If you want to learn more about a particular career or area of work, there are many vocational qualifications to choose from. Examples include BTECs and Diplomas. These are work-related qualifications available in a wide range of sectors. Many have been designed in collaboration with industry, so they can equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. The qualifications offer a mix of theory and practice, and can also include an element of work experience.

Foundation Learning qualifications

If you want to gain a nationally recognised qualification, but don’t feel ready for GCSEs or equivalent qualifications, Foundation Learning could be for you. These qualifications build skills, increase your knowledge and boost your confidence. They are available in a wide range of subjects in Tower Hamlets, including construction, creative and media and sports.

Young apprenticeship

Young apprenticeships enable 14-16 year olds to gain a vocational qualification and 50 days of work experience over two years. You also continue your core subjects, giving you a balanced curriculum and a broad set of future options. The programme gives you a platform from which you can progress to post–16 apprenticeships or level 3 vocational courses.
