Tower Hamlets Youth Council has been bringing in the changes over the past few months, and also bringing in new members.
The core group at the moment is 25 strong, made up of young people from all across the borough.
The meetings are now held once a month so the group can concentrate on focusing their time and attention to working on projects which are hoping to help the young people of Tower Hamlets.
Join the Youth Council
If you are interested in joining the Youth Council there are 2 ways you can get involved.
The first way is to just turn up at the monthly meetings and hear what’s going on or take part in the discussions. You can also bring your own issues to the Youth Council, maybe from your local forum, or from what you’ve been told by friends? It is free and open for anyone aged between 13 and 19 years old (or up to 25 if they have any disabilities) to come along and have a chance to get their voices heard and get involved in the evening.
The second way is to get involved with the weekly project groups. To be able to do this you will need to apply to be a full Youth Councillor, and we are currently taking applications until 31 April 2012, after which we will hold a recruitment day to assess who will be committed and up to the task to create and work on projects. Fill in the application form and email it to lee.ocsko@towerhamlets.gov.uk
What does the Youth Council do?
Tower Hamlets Youth Council aims to be the voice of the youth by consulting with young people on their issues and concerns, and to create opportunities for them to address these by:
- strengthening community relations
- influencing decision makers
- encouraging young people to speak in public
- uniting the youth
- running projects, campaigns, workshops and lobbying
- supporting and working in partnership with the Young Mayor
We are currently working on a number of projects:
- Hidden Heroes awards evening – recognizing the special achievements young people have made through personal/physical hardships which can often go unrecognized.
- OI! Film project – a short film designed to talk about the negative image and typical stereotyping young people face from the media.
- Platform Project – a consultation being carried out between various schools in and around the borough and filmed to be put on a DVD and presented to the Council’s top decision makers.
- Young Mayor/Youth Council Surgeries – We are currently working on delivering young people only surgeries in schools and centre’s to find out what you want us to be doing and the issues you would like us to address on your behalf
There are a number of roles within the Youth Council which have been internally elected and each member will have their own responsibility. The members are as follows:
Chair Person – Munadiah Aftab
Vice Chair Person – Yasmin Khan
Treasurer – Tabassum Noore
Photographer – Ruhid Miah
